LaCity Travel - Traveler Tips for Hong Kong

ACCOMMODATION: With more than 50,000 rooms available, Hong Kong offers a huge choice of accommodation to suit every budget, from modest guesthouses and youth hostels through every range of hotel up to super luxury. You can enjoy a harbour view or stay among the big city lights, in more rural settings or beside a beach. No matter where you stay, the excellent public transport system ensures all of Hong Kong’s attractions are close at hand.

CLIMATE / WEATHER: Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with distinct seasons. Typhoon season is May to November. When a typhoon is approaching, warnings are broadcast on TV and radio, and signals indicate its significance, the latest position and expected movement of the centre of the tropical cyclone, information on the wind strength, rainfall and sea level in the territory. When typhoon signal 8 is hoisted, businesses and shops close down and flights may be cancelled. There is a separate warning for heavy rain. Spring is from March to May, evenings cool days humid. Summer, from June to August, hot, humid and sunny with occasional showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures can exceed 31C. Autumn, September to November pleasant with comfortable temperatures. Winter, December to February, cool, dry and cloudy with occasional cold fronts where temperature drops below 10C in urban areas.

MONEY:The legal tender is the Hong Kong dollar (HK$), which is linked to the AUS dollar at a rate of about 1 HKD to 0,14 AUS, although exchange rates may fluctuate slightly. Interestingly, Hong Kong banknotes are issued by three banks (HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank and Bank of China), and vary in design and color for each denomination. You can exchange your currency for Hong Kong dollars at authorized money exchangers. At Hong Kong International Airport, currency exchange counters are conveniently open from early morning to late at night. There are 24-hour automated teller machines. The exchange rate fluctuates daily depending on the money market. ATMs can be found almost everywhere and some HSBC 'Electronic Money' machines provide 24-hour cash withdrawal (HK$) facilities for Visa and MasterCard holders. American Express cardholders have access to 'Aeon' ATMs and can withdraw local currency with Express Cash service in town. Traveller's cheques are accepted by leading banks and hotels.

ELECTRICITY: Hong Kong’s power supply is 220 volts, 50Hz. The British square three-pin plugs are the most common.

VISA: Australians on business or holiday may remain in Hong Kong for up to three months (visa free period) and are not generally required to obtain a visa. Visitors are required to have adequate funds to cover the duration of their stay without working, so unless you are in transit to China or Macau you should hold onward or return tickets.

SHOPPING:  For sheer variety of products and brands in all price ranges, Hong Kong is a unique shopping experience. From glitzy malls to funky street markets, and trendy boutiques to traditional Chinese product stores and themed shopping districts, you can find everything from the latest designer fashions and electronic gadgets to best-value antiques and collectibles.

TIME DIFFERENCE: Hong Kong is two hours behind Australian Eastern Standard Time. Hong Kong has no daylight-saving time during the Northern Hemisphere summer.

DIALING CODES: Hong Kong's country code is 852. For calls to Hong Kong from Australia dial: 0011 + 852 + area code + telephone number. For calls from Hong Kong to Australia dial: 001 + 61 + area code + telephone number.

ENTERTAINMENT: The ‘City of Life’ is a small place that lives large. A dynamic fusion of East and West, Hong Kong presents visitors with a kaleidoscope of entertainment that never stops.  Nightclubs, restaurants, night markets, theatre, theme parks, museums, horse racing and more.... the choices will keep you busy from dawn until dusk.  At night, the harbor comes alive with light shows, cruises and street entertainment as the seemingly endless wanderings of locals and visitors enjoy every exciting moment of their time in the city that never sleeps.
