LaCity Travel - Traveller Tips for Canada

VISAS: International visitors to Canada (not US citizens or US permanent residents) must carry a valid passport and, if required, a visa. Citizens from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia and others do not require a visa to enter Canada. Visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website for a complete listing of countries whose citizens require visas to enter Canada.

MONEY: The Canadian currency system uses dollars ($) and cents (¢) similar to the US, Australia and New Zealand. The current exchange rate is about AUD$1 = CAD$1. Major credit cards such as American Express, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted in Canada. Standard banking hours are Monday to Thursday from 9:30 am until 4:00 pm. Many banks are open to 6:00 pm on Friday. Some banks and specific branches may be open later on weeknights and even on Saturdays. Trust companies are generally open from 9 am to 6 pm on weekdays and on Saturday mornings.

ELECTRICITY: Canadian appliances operate on 110 volts (60Hz), which is identical to the US voltage. A universal adaptor is required for overseas electrical devices.

CLIMATE / WEATHER: In Canada has winter, spring, summer and fall. However the climate and intensity of these seasons varies across the country. The west coast of British Columbia, including Vancouver, has a moderate climate year round and thus the seasons are less distinct from one another. Overall, the west coast has summers that aren't as warm nor winters that are as bitterly cold as say, Toronto or Montreal. The height of winter is freezing cold in most places except for the BC coast, where winters are moderate with little snow. Nearby Whistler, on the other hand gets loads of snow and is a major ski destination through May. In the Rockies, winter is long. However, snow stays around only in the higher altitudes. Calgary, does not get much snow, but Banff and Canmore may get two feet in April. In addition, southern Alberta gets winter relief from warm Chinook winds. Eastern Canada, including Toronto and Montreal, has a short, fierce winter, below zero temperatures most of the time, and -20°C (-4°F) not uncommon. At least one or two snowfalls of eight inches or more will likely hit in January and February.

LANGUAGE: English and French

TIPPING: Tipping is a common practice in Canada. Tips or service charges are not usually added to restaurant bills in Canada, but server salaries are based on the assumption that staff will receive a good proportion of income in tips. Some restaurants will also place a mandatory service charge on a bill for large groups. In general, you should reward good service by tipping 15-20% of the total amount.

SHOPPING:  You'll enjoy convenient shopping hours across Canada with many stores open from 9:00 or 10:00 am to 6:00 pm seven days a week. City stores and suburban shopping centers are also open until 9:00 pm on several weeknights, particularly on Thursday and Friday.Sunday shopping is permitted in all provinces and territories across Canada. Some store owners may choose not to open on Sunday so call ahead before you set out on your shopping excursion.

HEALTHCARE: The standard of health facilities in Canada is comparable with that in Australia but the provincially run health care systems are not easily accessible to temporary visitors. Many physicians will not take new patients, however walk-in medical clinics are available throughout major cities. Visitors who seek medical attention in Canada should be prepared to pay in full at the time the service is provided. This includes dual nationals who may not be eligible for free Canadian healthcare due to provincial residential requirements. There is no reciprocal health care agreement in place between Australia and Canada.

TIME ZONE: Canada encompasses six of the world's 24 time zones. From east to west, they are: Newfoundland Standard Time Zone, Atlantic Standard Time Zone, Eastern Standard Time Zone, Central Standard Time Zone, Mountain Standard Time Zone and Pacific Standard Time Zone. Some provinces and territories encompass two time zones within their borders.

TRAVEL INSURANCE: All passengers must have comprehensive travel insurance. You can complete this with LaCity Travel if you wish. Check your Travel Insurance Policy for an Emergency number and details of services to be provided, Carry these details with you.
